Tree Mallows (Lavatera thuringiaca) - Description
Lavatera thuringiaca is a species of Lavatera native to eastern Europe and southwestern Asia, from southern Germany south to Italy, and east to southern Russia, Kazakhstan, and Turkey. It is a herbaceous perennial plant growing to 1. 8 m tall. The leaves are up to 9 cm long and broad, palmately lobed with three or five lobes, and downy with greyish hairs. The flowers are pink, 3–6 cm diameter, with five petals; they are produced throughout the summer. There are two subspecies:
Tree Mallows (Lavatera thuringiaca) - Blooming
Flowers look similar to those of Hollyhocks (Alcea). Different species have different bloom times.
Tree Mallows (Lavatera thuringiaca) - Growth
Annuals, biennials, herbaceous, semi-evergreen, or evergreen perennials, and deciduous, semi-evergreen, or evergreen shrubs and subshrubs. Does best in full sun except for L. maritima, which needs partial to full shade. The tallest of these species can reach 10 ft. tall. Annuals, biennials, and short-lived perennials work best in a herbaceous border or summer bedding. Shrubs make nice additions to a shrub border. Less hardy shrubs can be grown against a sunny wall.
Tree Mallows (Lavatera thuringiaca) - Planting
Some species are available as seeds and should be sown in the spring. Seeds of annuals should be sown directly into the ground in late spring. For biennials, sow seeds in a cold frame during the summer. Propagate perennials from softwood or greenwood cuttings in spring. Also conduct this method for shrubs and subshrubs in early summer. It is best to propagate on a regular basis, as shrubs and perennials are usually short-lived.
Tree Mallows (Lavatera thuringiaca) - Pest
Scale insects. Lavatera is also prone to leaf spots, root rot, and rust.
Tree Mallows (Lavatera thuringiaca) - Interesting facts
