Kashmir Acanthus (Strobilanthes wallichii) - Description
Strobilanthes wallichii, commonly known as Kashmir Acanthus, Hardy Persian Shield, Wild Petunia, or Kandali, is a herbaceous perennial which is native to the Himalayas. In its natural habitat, it purple blooms appear only once every twelve years, an occasion which is celebrated by the Kandali Festival in the Pithoragarh District in India.

Blooms in summer, but the flowers are not as showy as the foliage. The flowers are funnel-shaped, 2-lipped with hoods.

Evergreen or deciduous perennials or soft-stemmed shrubs. Needs partial shade. Can reach 4 ft. tall and 3 ft. wide. Hardy plants grow well in a herbaceous border. Tender species work well as summer bedding, or grow in a warm greenhouse.
