Woolflowers (Celosia spicata) - Description
Cockscombs are flower annuals. They are known for their odd shaped flower clusters, of which there are two types: plume type ("Plumosa") and crested type ("Cristata"). Flowers com in brilliant shades of pink, orange, red, gold and purple.

Summer heat will induce blooming. Blooms interesting inflorescences that are plum-like or crest-like in appearance.

Erect annuals, perennials, and shrubs. Some Cockscombs can grow to 3' tall and 1 1/2' wide. Grows best in full sun. Plants grow very well in pots and containers. Celosia is usually grown as an annual. The flowers are suitable for cutting and drying as they are long lasting.

Seeds can be sown in place in late Spring or early Summer. Sow in a well-drained planting medium. Cockscombs are native to the tropics, but can do well in many other climates. It grows widespread across northern South America, tropical Africa, the West Indies, South, East and Southeast Asia where it is grows as a native or naturalized wildflower, and is cultivated as a nutritious leafy green vegetable. The flowers are easy to harvest and dry for dried bouquets.
