Trachelium Caeruleum (Trachelium caeruleum) - Description

Trachelium caeruleum (common name blue throatwort) is a species of flowering plant in the family Campanulaceae, native to the western and central Mediterranean. Growing to 120 cm (47 in) tall by 30 cm (12 in) wide, it is a woody-based erect herbaceous perennial, with oval leaves and dense cushions of violet-purple flowers in summer. The specific epithet caeruleum means "dark blue". In temperate areas this plant is usually grown as a half-hardy annual for summer bedding schemes or planters. It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.

Wood-based perennial. Grows best in full sun with some shade during the middle of the day. Some species are dwarfs, which work well in a rock garden or scree bed. Other cultivars are nice for a border. The flowers of Trachelium are suitable for cutting.

Trachelium Caeruleum (Trachelium caeruleum) - Planting

Less hardy species should be propagated from the seed in early spring at 55-61°F (13-16°C), or "in situ". Hardy species should be sown when ripe in containers in a cold frame (for protection). Can also propagate from softwood cuttings in summer.

Trachelium Caeruleum (Trachelium caeruleum) - Pest

Aphids and spider mites.
