Angelonia (Angelonia hybrids) - Description
Angelonias are erect flowering perennials native to South America. They are grown as annuals but are perennial in temperate and tropical climates.
Angelonia (Angelonia hybrids) - Blooming
Flowers look like miniature Delphiniums that appear in summer. Cuttings will flower in about 6 to 8 weeks if given proper light and warmth.
Angelonia (Angelonia hybrids) - Growth
Does best with full sun. Cold temperatures will stagnate or delay growth.
Angelonia (Angelonia hybrids) - Planting
Good candidate as a bedding plant and in containers. Angelonia is often propagated using cuttings, which should be planted as soon as possible after cutting from the parent plant, after dipping the rooting end in growth hormone. Immature cuttings should be shielded from temperatures below 70°F (21°C) and above 80°F (21°C). Once cuttings have taken root, they are more tolerant to moisture loss and variable temperatures.
Angelonia (Angelonia hybrids) - Pest
No serious pest problems. Occasionally, whiteflies, thrips and aphids can be problematic, but only if present in particularly high numbers. Angelonia are also susceptible to botryis, pythium and rhizoctonia (diseases).
Angelonia (Angelonia hybrids) - Interesting facts
Angelonia is most commonly used in outdoor planters. Generally known to be easy to grow. However, be aware that Angelonia stems and leaves are covered with fine hairs that excrete a sticky, aromatic substance, which can be a nuisance while handling.
Angelonia (Angelonia hybrids) - Soil and irrigation
Does best with regular water, but can also resist drought. Does best with well-drained soil that retains water.
