O. europaea is native to the Mediterranean. It bears willowlike soft gray-green foliage. Olive trees look best when grown in deep, rich soil, but they will also grow in shallow, alkaline or stony soul with little fertilizer. They thrive in areas with hot, dry summers, and also perform well in coastal areas.
