Interrupted Fern (Osmunda claytoniana) - Description

Osmunda claytoniana, the Interrupted Fern, is a fern native to Eastern Asia and eastern North America, in the Eastern United States and Eastern Canada. This species is named after the English-born Virginian botanist John Clayton. The plant is known from fossils to have grown in Europe, showing a previous circumboreal distribution. Fragmentary foliage resembling Osmunda claytoniana has been found in the fossil record as far back as the Triassic, and is known as †Osmunda claytoniites.

Interrupted Fern (Osmunda claytoniana) - Blooming

Spores on specialized, cinnamon colored fronds.

Interrupted Fern (Osmunda claytoniana) - Growth

Vigorous ferns that have featherlike once or twice cut fronds and a thick mat of horsehair like roots. 2-5 feet tall. Grows best in light shade, although will tolerate full sun in a damp site where water is plentiful. Works well near a stream or pond. Osmunda prefers wet sites.

Interrupted Fern (Osmunda claytoniana) - Planting

Divide clumps in spring or fall. Can also propagate by sowing spores immediately when they become ripe in summer. Spores can lose viability if planting is delayed.

Interrupted Fern (Osmunda claytoniana) - Pest

The only real problem is rust.

Interrupted Fern (Osmunda claytoniana) - Interesting facts

Osmunda is found everywhere except Australia. As no ferns actually flower, flowering ferns are named after the mass of showy, golden colored sporangia that ripen at the same time on the fertile fronds.

Interrupted Fern (Osmunda claytoniana) - Soil and irrigation

Rich soil, evenly moist and well-drained to constantly moist or wet. Prefers acidic soil.
