Peony (Paeonia officinalis) - Description
Paeonia officinalis is also known as the Common Peony. It grows into a nice upright low growing herbaceous shrub that loads up with blooms in early summer on stiff stems. Generally bears single open cup shaped flowers surrounding bright yellow stamen but there are several varieties that feature double blooms. Colors range from red to rose pink in color, with some cultivars having white blooms or salmon colored blooms. This is a beautiful standard that will last for years if given a good environment.

Large, bright flowers in a range of colors followed by pod-like fruits containing sometimes black or red seeds. Herbaceous Peonies bloom best when they have a sufficient winter chill.
