Arrowhead Vine (Syngonium podophyllum) - Description
Syngonium /sɪŋˈɡoʊniəm/ is a genus of about 36 species of flowering plants in the family Araceae, native to tropical rain forests in Central and South America. They are woody vines growing to heights of 10–20 m or more in trees. They have leaves that change shape according to the plant's stage of growth, and adult leaf forms are often much more lobed than the juvenile forms usually seen on small house plants.
Arrowhead Vine (Syngonium podophyllum) - Blooming
Blooms small, petalless flowers, borne on spadices surrounded by spathes.
Arrowhead Vine (Syngonium podophyllum) - Growth
Evergreen root climbers from tropical areas. Grows best in partial or dappled shade, with moderate humidity and support. Syngonium works well as a groundcover or wall cover. In areas where temperatures drop below 59°F (15°C), raise plants indoors as houseplants or in a warm greenhouse. A warm greenhouse has a minimum temperature of 55°F (13°C). During the day, temperatures should be set to 55-64°F (13-18°C) or above, and at night, the temperature should be at 55°F (13°C).
Arrowhead Vine (Syngonium podophyllum) - Planting
Propagate from stem tip or leaf bud cuttings in summer.
Arrowhead Vine (Syngonium podophyllum) - Pest
Syngonium is prone to aphids, spider mites, mealybugs, and scale insects. Other problems include bacterial leaf spot, soft rot, and fungal diseases.
Arrowhead Vine (Syngonium podophyllum) - Interesting facts
There are 33 known species of Syngonium, native to the woodlands of tropical Central and South America. All parts of Syngonium can cause stomach upset upon consumption, and contact with the sap may aggravate the skin.
Arrowhead Vine (Syngonium podophyllum) - Soil and irrigation
Grows best in soil that is fertile and moist. Soilless potting mixes work fine for indoor plants. Water liberally during the growing season, moderately in winter. Provide plants with support using a moss pole.
