Tamarisk (Tamarix parviflora) - Description

Tamarix parviflora (syn. T. tetrandra) is a species of tamarisk known by the common name smallflower tamarisk. It is native to southeastern Europe but it is well-known elsewhere, such as western North America, where it is an invasive introduced species. Deciduous shrubs and small trees. Tamarix does well in full sun and will grow approx. 6-15 ft. tall. Plants in coastal regions are resistant to strong winds. Works well as a shrub border for an inland garden. In coastal sites, on sandy soils, Tamarix is a suitable windbreak.

Propagate from the seed. Sow when ripe in containers in a cold frame. Can also use hardwood cuttings in winter, or semi-ripe cuttings in summer.

Uncommon.

Tamarisk (Tamarix parviflora) - Soil and irrigation

Tamarix grows in saline soils and will endure an absence of water for long periods of time. In coastal regions, Tamarix needs well-draining soil. Moister soil is necessary if planted inland.
