Salt Cedar (Tamarix tetandra) - Description

Coniferous, evergreen shrubs or trees from dry regions of Africa, Europe, and Asia. They are survivalists and will tolerate flooding, drought, fire and extremely salty soil. Invasive in North America.

Blooms small racemes of pink flowers.

Salt Cedar (Tamarix tetandra) - Growth

Deciduous shrubs and small trees. Tamarix does well in full sun and will grow approx. 6-15 ft. tall. Plants in coastal regions are resistant to strong winds. Works well as a shrub border for an inland garden. In coastal sites, on sandy soils, Tamarix is a suitable windbreak.

Salt Cedar (Tamarix tetandra) - Planting

Propagate from the seed. Sow when ripe in containers in a cold frame. Can also use hardwood cuttings in winter, or semi-ripe cuttings in summer.

Salt Cedar (Tamarix tetandra) - Pest

Uncommon.

Salt Cedar (Tamarix tetandra) - Soil and irrigation

Tamarix grows in saline soils and will endure an absence of water for long periods of time. In coastal regions, Tamarix needs well-draining soil. Moister soil is necessary if planted inland.
