Tamarisk (Tamarix tetrandra) - Description
Tamarix tetrandra is a species of flowering plant in the family Tamaricaceae, native to south eastern Europe, Turkey, Bulgaria and Crimea. Growing to 3 m (10 ft) tall and broad, it is a small deciduous tree with almost black arching branches, and tiny scale-like leaves arranged along the branches. Racemes of pale pink flowers are produced in late spring.

Deciduous shrubs and small trees. Tamarix does well in full sun and will grow approx. 6-15 ft. tall. Plants in coastal regions are resistant to strong winds. Works well as a shrub border for an inland garden. In coastal sites, on sandy soils, Tamarix is a suitable windbreak.

Propagate from the seed. Sow when ripe in containers in a cold frame. Can also use hardwood cuttings in winter, or semi-ripe cuttings in summer.

Tamarix grows in saline soils and will endure an absence of water for long periods of time. In coastal regions, Tamarix needs well-draining soil. Moister soil is necessary if planted inland.
