Pond Cypress (Taxodium ascendens) - Description
Taxodium ascendens, also known as Pond Cypress, is a deciduous conifer of the genus Taxodium, native to North America. Many botanists treat it as a variety of Bald Cypress, Taxodium distichum (as T. distichum var. imbricarium) rather than as a distinct species, but it differs in ecology, occurring mainly in still blackwater rivers, ponds and swamps without silt-rich flood deposits. It predominates in cypress dome habitats.
Pond Cypress (Taxodium ascendens) - Blooming
Male cones are borne in groups, females are scattered.
Pond Cypress (Taxodium ascendens) - Growth
Coniferous trees, monoecious, deciduous or semi-evergreen. Taxodiums do well in full sun. Height varies depending on variety. One species can reach a height of 100'. Deciduous shoots fall in autumn. For shoots with buds, only the leaves fall. Attractive autumn foliage. Grows well in wet or boggy sites. Will produce aerial roots on the surface of the water. Taxodium works best as a specimen tree.
Pond Cypress (Taxodium ascendens) - Planting
Propagate from the seed. Sow in spring, in containers in a cold frame (for protection and to ensure hardiness).
Pond Cypress (Taxodium ascendens) - Pest
Bark beetle. Taxodium is also prone to leaf spot and wood rot.
Pond Cypress (Taxodium ascendens) - Interesting facts
There are only 3 known species of Taxodium found in swampy or boggy sites from the South Eastern United States to Guatemala.
Pond Cypress (Taxodium ascendens) - Soil and irrigation
Taxodiums will tolerate dry to wet soil. T. distichum is not fussy about soil with one exception, alkaline. Does best in acidic soil.
