Prickly Ash (Zanthoxylum simulans) - Description
Zanthoxylum simulans (Chinese Prickly-ash or Flatspine Prickly-ash), is a flowering plant in the family Rutaceae, native to eastern China and Taiwan. It is one of several species of Zanthoxylum from which Sichuan pepper is produced (see that page for uses). It is a spreading shrub or small tree growing to 7 m tall.
Prickly Ash (Zanthoxylum simulans) - Blooming
Blooms from spring to summer with small, cup-shaped flowers, usually greenish yellow in color. Plants can be dioecious, or produce both bisexual and unisexual flowers. Followed by fruits, which often split open to reveal black seeds.
Prickly Ash (Zanthoxylum simulans) - Growth
Grows best with full sun exposure. Appropriate for a shrub border, or as ornamental trees. In areas where Zanthoxylum is not growing hardy, raise plants in a cool greenhouse with a minimum temperature of 35ºF (2ºC). During the day, set temperatures between 41-50ºF (5-10ºC), and at night, keep the temperature at 36ºF (2ºC).
Prickly Ash (Zanthoxylum simulans) - Planting
Sow seeds in fall, in containers in a cold frame. Cold frames are protective structures, located outside for propagating and growing plants. Propagate from semi-ripe cuttings towards the middle of summer. Semi-ripe cuttings are cuttings taken from semi-mature wood.
Prickly Ash (Zanthoxylum simulans) - Pest
Prone to powdery mildew, rust, and leaf spots.
Prickly Ash (Zanthoxylum simulans) - Interesting facts
Native to the forests of Asia, Australia, North and South America, and Africa.
Prickly Ash (Zanthoxylum simulans) - Soil and irrigation
Grows best in soil that is fertile and well-draining.
