Dutchman's Pipe (Aristolochia macrophylla) - Description
A. macrophylla is native to the Eastern United States. It is easily grown from seeds, and can grow to heights of 6 to 14 inches tall. It bears kidney-shaped deep green leaves. It's vine covers an area of 15 to 20 feet in a single season. It blooms in late spring and early summer.
Dutchman's Pipe (Aristolochia macrophylla) - Blooming
Blooms from late Winter to early Summer depending on the species.
Dutchman's Pipe (Aristolochia macrophylla) - Growth
This genus of plants consists of species that are very vigorous growers. They grow as self-tangling vines. Although plants need varying soil types (either rich soil or accepting of any soil dependent on the species), all species grow in partial shade with some tolerance of full sun. Ample water promotes rapid growth and larger leaves.
Dutchman's Pipe (Aristolochia macrophylla) - Planting
Plant seeds in spring or as soon as ripe and temperatures are above 55°F (12°C). Divide the plants in spring.
Dutchman's Pipe (Aristolochia macrophylla) - Interesting facts
Flowers from the genus Aristolochia have interesting shapes and often times sober colors. The flowers resemble curved smoking pipes or birds with bent necks. The plants are sometimes called Birthwort, since an elixir derived from the plant was used to assist in the expulsion of the placenta. The preparation given to the birthing mother was often fatal as the compound aristilochic acid can be fatal to humans.
Dutchman's Pipe (Aristolochia macrophylla) - Soil and irrigation
Heavy irrigation will promote larger leaf size. Some species of Aristolochia are fussy about soil type, but most are not. A. elegans needs rich soil.
