False Heather (Cuphea hyssopifolia) - Description

Cuphea hyssopifolia (false heather, Mexican heather, Hawaiian heather or elfin herb) is a small evergreen shrub native to Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras. It grows to about 60 cm (24 in) high by 90 cm (35 in) wide and has purple, lavender or white coloured flowers and fine foliage. The species is naturalised in Hawaii, and regarded as a serious weed there.

Cuphea are short-lived. Tubular flowers either singly or in clusters. Bloom period varies among species, but most flowers appear from late spring to fall. Hummingbirds visit the flowers.

Short-lived perennials and shrubs. They have ovate to lance-shaped leaves and are covered with sticky hairs. If grown in containers they may be brought indoors for the winter, kept 60-65°F (15-18°C) and in a bright spot.
