Strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa 'Surecrop') - Description
Enjoy a bountiful harvest during the traditional strawberry season. Primarily, June-bearing fruits may ripen in May in warmer climates, producing an abundant crop of very large, delicious berries. Great fresh off the vine or for freezing. Grow in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. Many gardeners will remove the flowers the first season in order to establish a strong, robust root system that will produce a bountiful harvest the following spring. Mulch plants well to keep down weeds and conserve moisture.

Excessive heat or dryness will cause flowering (and fruiting) to stop. Remove flowers for about 6 weeks if plant needs to become established. Afterwards, leave flowers to allow fruiting. Fertile soil, watered, but well-drained, and sunlight are important for ripening the fruit.

The garden strawberry resulted in an accidental cross between the small delicious Fragaria virginiana from eastern America and and the large Fragaria chiloensis from Chile in the 1700s, yielding the large, flavorful fruit we know today.
