Saw Palmetto (Serenoa repens) - Description

Serenoa repens, commonly known as saw palmetto, is the sole species currently classified in the genus Serenoa. It has been known by a number of synonyms, including Sabalserrulatum, under which name it still often appears in alternative medicine. It is a small palm, normally reaching a height of around 2–4 m (3–6 ft).

The fruit of the Saw Palmetto has a high concentration of secondary metabolites called phytosterols and of essential fatty acids. Extracts from these fruits have been used for medicinal purposes. Some believe that Saw Palmetto fruit extract can help with urinary disorders. Native Americans used these fruits as sources of food. Mayans created a tonic from the fruit for imbibing.
