Jerusalem Cherry (Solanum pseudocapsicum) - Description

Jerusalem Cherry (Solanum pseudocapsicum) is an evergreen, semi woody, tropical, perennial shrub known for it's poisonous fruit. The poison is not life threatening but will induce vomiting and gastric situations. The plant is native to Peru and Ecuador. Flowers are small, white and star shaped while the fruits resemble small cherry tomato's. The Jerusalem Cherry is hardy in zones 8a-15b but is also grown as a house plant.

Jerusalem Cherry (Solanum pseudocapsicum) - Blooming

Jerusalem Cherry's typical bloom period is early spring through summer. It has small star shaped flowers. Small round poisonous fruits follow the flowers. When grown indoors plants should be tapped or shaken daily during blooming in order to pollinate the flowers to achieve later fruits. Outside, bees pollinate the flowers which yield the subsequent fruit. Non pollinated flowers will not produce fruit. Lightly shaking the plant assists with pollinating when bees aren't present.
