Zebra Plant (Aphelandra squarrosa) - Description

Aphelandra squarrosa (commonly but ambiguously called "zebra plant") is a plant species in the family Acanthaceae, which is native to Atlantic Forest vegetation of Brazil. This plant is often used as a house plant. This plant is cited in Flora Brasiliensis by Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius.

Flowers are borne on the tips of upright stalks, intermittently throughout the year. They have showy yellow flower bracts.

Zebra Plant (Aphelandra squarrosa) - Growth

Evergreen shrubs and subshrubs. Does best with some shade or bright indirect light. In tropical climates, Zebra Plants can grow to 6 1/2' tall. When they are grown as houseplants, however, they rarely get taller than 2'. In less hardy areas, grow Aphelandra in a temperate or warm greenhouse or as a houseplant. Works well as bedding for a border.

Zebra Plant (Aphelandra squarrosa) - Planting

Cuttings from the stem can be taken in late winter to late spring. Should be propagated every few years.

Zebra Plant (Aphelandra squarrosa) - Pest

Aphids, scale insects, and mealybugs. Prone to fungal diseases, leaf spot, and crown rot.

Zebra Plant (Aphelandra squarrosa) - Soil and irrigation

Does well with regular water. Grow in humus-rich, well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Water freely during growing period, sparingly in winter.
