European Wild Ginger (Asarum europaeum) - Description
Although many wild gingers are native to the continental United States, this species is native to Western Europe. The plant is called wild ginger because the rhizome tastes and smells similar to that of ginger root, but the two are not particularly related. The root can be used as a spice, but is a potent diuretic, or urinary stimulant. Wild ginger can easily be grown in a shade garden, and makes an attractive groundcover.
European Wild Ginger (Asarum europaeum) - Growth
Does best with partial to full shade. Wild Gingers are good candidates for ground covers.
European Wild Ginger (Asarum europaeum) - Planting
Plant at least 1 ft. apart. As soon as ripe, sow seeds in containers in a cold frame. Some species may self-seed freely. In early spring, carefully divide.
European Wild Ginger (Asarum europaeum) - Pest
Slugs and snails can cause problems, especially during springtime. Leaf gall and rust may occur.
European Wild Ginger (Asarum europaeum) - Interesting facts
Asarum includes about 70 species producing large marbled and glossy leaves. The flowers are pitcher-shaped, and somewhat malodorous. However, the rhizomes are aromatic and smell similar to ginger.
European Wild Ginger (Asarum europaeum) - Soil and irrigation
Does well in moderately fertile, humus-rich, well-drained but moist soil. Neutral to acidic soil is best.
