Eggplant (Solanum melongena 'Rosa Bianca') - Description

This gorgeous old Italian variety has medium-sized white fruits that are heavily blushed and streaked with rosy purple. Mildly sweet flavor and a heavy yielder makes for a very popular vegetable plant indeed! Expect this Eggplant to reach full maturity in about 74 days.

Eggplant (Solanum melongena 'Rosa Bianca') - Growth

Does best with humidity and heat. Day time temperatures above 80°F are preferable. Night time temperatures below 70°F can decrease fruit yield. In cold climates protect young plants with floating row covers to increase the temperature directly around the plant.

Eggplant (Solanum melongena 'Rosa Bianca') - Planting

Sow seeds in an area protected from the cold up to 2 months before the projected last frost of winter. Plant the seedlings in the ground 2 weeks after the threat of frost has passed. (Leaving your eggplant to grow in a container is not necessarily bad. They generally thrive in the heat that the container provides). The soil temperatures should be above 60°F. Plant in rows that are over 2' apart. Each plant should be given at least 18" of space in between individual plants in a single row.

Eggplant (Solanum melongena 'Rosa Bianca') - Pest

Prone to wilts. The primary method of decreasing the incidence of disease is to rotate crops. Try not to grow eggplant in the same plot season after season. Pick off any beetles or caterpillars you see on the plant.

Eggplant (Solanum melongena 'Rosa Bianca') - Interesting facts

There are 1,400 known species of Solanum spread throughout the world. The fruits of S. capsicastrum and S. pseudocapsicum are especially toxic to humans, and will cause severe stomach upset if ingested.

Eggplant (Solanum melongena 'Rosa Bianca') - Soil and irrigation

Does best with regular water. Provide soil that rich with organic matter and that is slightly acidic.
