Japanese Banana (Musa basjoo) - Description
Musa basjoo, known variously as Japanese Banana, Japanese Fibre Banana or Hardy Banana, is a species belonging to the genus Musa. It was previously thought to have originated from the Ryukyu islands of Japan, from where it was first described in cultivation, but is now known to have originated from southern China, where it is also widely cultivated, with wild populations found in Sichuan province.
Japanese Banana (Musa basjoo) - Blooming
Blooms clusters of tubular flowers in summer followed by edible, cylindrical fruits.
Japanese Banana (Musa basjoo) - Growth
Plantains grow best in full sun, with protection from the wind, especially in the early growth stages. Ornamental plants should be repotted in spring, every year to every other year. Plant out species used in bedding when the threat of frost has passed. Pot up in fall. Musa works great as specimen plants in warm areas, but where not hardy (frost prone regions), plants should be raised in a temperate greenhouse. Temperate greenhouses have daytime temperatures set between 50-55ºF (10-13ºC), and a nighttime temperature of 45ºF (7ºC).
Japanese Banana (Musa basjoo) - Planting
When ripe, sow seeds at 70-75ºF (21-24ºC). Bananas are tropical plants and do not tolerate frost. For spring-sown seeds, pre-soak the seeds for 24 hours before sowing. In early spring, separate suckers, and remove older leaves to promote new growth. Conduct division every 3-5 years. Division entails propagating a plant by splitting it into 2 or more parts. Each part has its own root system and more than one shoot or dormant bud.
Japanese Banana (Musa basjoo) - Pest
Musa is prone to spider mites, mealybugs, aphids, burrowing nematode, cucumber mosaic virus, black leaf streak, wilt, and anthracnose.
Japanese Banana (Musa basjoo) - Interesting facts
There are around 40 species of Musa, endemic to areas in India, Bangladesh, Asia to Japan, and Australia. Plantains are usually cooked before eating. Bananas and plantains are the 4th largest fruit crop in the world.
Japanese Banana (Musa basjoo) - Soil and irrigation
Bananas grow best in soil that is fertile and humus-rich. Soil based potting mixes work fine for indoor plants. Water liberally during the growing season, keep just moist in winter.
