Pickerel Weed (Pontederia cordata) - Description
Pontederia cordata, common name pickerelweed (USA) or pickerel weed (UK), is a monocotyledonous aquatic plant native to the American continent. It grows in a variety of wetlands, including pond and lake margins across an extremely large range from eastern Canada south to Argentina. A few examples include northern rivers, the Everglades and Louisiana.
Pickerel Weed (Pontederia cordata) - Blooming
Short spikes of bright blue or white flowers top 4' or shorter stems. The flowers will not open entirely during summers that are cool and wet.
Pickerel Weed (Pontederia cordata) - Growth
Marginally aquatic perennial, grown in companion to water lilies. Long stalked leaves stand well above the surface of water, heart-shaped to 10 in long. Grows best in full sun. Pontederia works well near a pond or grown in a water-filled barrel in a sunny site.

Sow seeds when ripe in aquatic containers outdoors in atmost 4-5" deep water. Germination rate will be the highest if the seeds are allowed a 30-day dry dormancy period before sowing. Can also propagate by division in late spring.
