Cape Primrose (Streptocarpus x 'Mighty Mouse') - Description

Cape Primrose (Streptocarpus x 'Mighty Mouse') - Growth
Cape primroses grow best in partial shade, or bright filtered light. Where Streptocarpus is not growing hardy, raise plants in a warm greenhouse. A warm greenhouse has a minimum temperature of 55ºF (13ºC). During the day, temperatures should be set to 55-64ºF (13-18ºC) or above, and at night, the temperature should be at 55ºF (13ºC). In warm areas, cape primroses work well in a humid, shady border.
Cape Primrose (Streptocarpus x 'Mighty Mouse') - Planting
In late winter or spring, surface-sow seeds at 64ºF (18ºC). Conduct division in spring or early summer. Division entails propagating a plant by splitting it into 2 or more parts. Each part has its own root system and more than one shoot or dormant bud. Propagate from stem-tip cuttings or leaf cuttings in spring with bottom heat.
Cape Primrose (Streptocarpus x 'Mighty Mouse') - Pest
Streptocarpus is prone to mealybugs and aphids.
Cape Primrose (Streptocarpus x 'Mighty Mouse') - Interesting facts
There are about 130 species of Streptocarpus, endemic to southern Africa, Madagascar, and China. Four species are from southeastern Asia. Some species are monocarpic, meaning that they die after producing seeds just once. Many species are also epiphytic.
Cape Primrose (Streptocarpus x 'Mighty Mouse') - Soil and irrigation
Cape primroses grow best in soil that is fertile, leafy, humus-rich, moist, yet well-drained. Soilless potting mixes work fine for indoor plants. Water liberally during the growing season, but allow the soil to dry out between waterings. This will prevent basal rot from developing.
