Princess Flower (Tibouchina urvilleana) - Description
Princess Flowers are tropical plants that can bloom throughout the year if the weather is permissable. These plants can be rather invasive in Hawaii, but when grown elsewhere they make nice outdoor shrubs that provide nice splashes of purple from their unique looking flowers.
Princess Flower (Tibouchina urvilleana) - Blooming
Constant deadheading can prolong flowering.
Princess Flower (Tibouchina urvilleana) - Growth
Tibouchinas can withstand full sun, however, they will need protection from the sun in warmer climates. If temperatures hover around freezing, the plants may die back. Fortunately, Tibouchinas will often times bounce back in the spring.
Princess Flower (Tibouchina urvilleana) - Planting
Sow seeds when the weather warms in spring and reaches at least 60°F (15°C). Stem cuttings can be made in late spring and summer as long as bottom heat is provided.
Princess Flower (Tibouchina urvilleana) - Pest
Prone to root rot, leaf spots and spider mites if there is not sufficient air circulation.
Princess Flower (Tibouchina urvilleana) - Interesting facts
Members of this genus are mostly native to Brazil, but they can be found as far north as the wetter regions of tropical Mexico. They are sometimes called spider flowers since the inner parts of the flowers resemble a spider's legs creeping out from in between the petals.
Princess Flower (Tibouchina urvilleana) - Soil and irrigation
Does best with regular water in soils that retain moisture and that are moderately fertile. Water freely during the normal growing season.
