Toad Lily (Tricyrtis x 'Sinonome') - Description
Any deep shade perennial is valuable, and one that blooms in fall must be doubly so. These tall, graceful plants with shiny lily-like leaves are perfect with Hostas and hellebores. They hold their purple-blotched flowers "like tiny orchids" just above the jungle of greenery.
Toad Lily (Tricyrtis x 'Sinonome') - Blooming
Flowers in late summer and fall. Flowers are interestingly spotted with various colors.
Toad Lily (Tricyrtis x 'Sinonome') - Growth
Rhizomatous or stoloniferous herbaceous perennials. Toad Lilies need deep or partial shade to grow best. In sites where winters are harsh, overwinter young plants for the first winter in a cold greenhouse. Tricyrtis works best in a woodland garden or a shady border.
Toad Lily (Tricyrtis x 'Sinonome') - Planting
Sow seeds when ripe in containers in a cold frame (for protection and to ensure hardiness). Can also propagate by division when dormant in early spring.
Toad Lily (Tricyrtis x 'Sinonome') - Pest
Slugs and snails are a threat in spring when plants are young.
Toad Lily (Tricyrtis x 'Sinonome') - Soil and irrigation
Needs soils with plenty of organic matter. Thrives with ample water.
