Japan Pepper (Zanthoxylum piperitum) - Description
Zanthoxylum piperitum, the Japanese pepper, Japanese pricklyash, (Japanese: 山椒 sanshō) is a deciduous aromatic spiny shrub or small tree, belonging to the Rutaceae (citrus and rue) family. Natural range spans from Hokkaido to Kyushu in Japan, southern parts of the Korean peninsula, and Chinese mainland. The related Z. schinifolium (Japanese: イヌザンショウ pron.
Japan Pepper (Zanthoxylum piperitum) - Blooming
Blooms from spring to summer with small, cup-shaped flowers, usually greenish yellow in color. Plants can be dioecious, or produce both bisexual and unisexual flowers. Followed by fruits, which often split open to reveal black seeds.
Japan Pepper (Zanthoxylum piperitum) - Growth
Grows best with full sun exposure. Appropriate for a shrub border, or as ornamental trees. In areas where Zanthoxylum is not growing hardy, raise plants in a cool greenhouse with a minimum temperature of 35ºF (2ºC). During the day, set temperatures between 41-50ºF (5-10ºC), and at night, keep the temperature at 36ºF (2ºC).
