Japanese Tree Peony (Paeonia suffruticosa) - Description

Paeonia suffruticosa is known as the Japanese Tree Peony this has almost too many varietals to list. Nice in size and shape it gets to about 7' high by 7' wide and features large blooms in single, semi double, and double. Color range includes white, pink, red, purple, and salmon with all combinations there within. This Peony loves being in a spot with some afternoon shade, but can handle full sunlight if given enough moisture. Usually Japanese Tree Peonies are grafted onto rootstock as opposed to Chinese Tree Peonies.

Large, bright flowers in a range of colors followed by pod-like fruits containing sometimes black or red seeds. Herbaceous Peonies bloom best when they have a sufficient winter chill. Although they can survive intense heat in the summer, the flowers will not last as long if temperatures get too hot.
