Tulipa (Tulipa linifolia) - Description

Tulipa linifolia (syn. T. batalinii) is a species of flowering plant in the tulip genus Tulipa (Clusiana group), family Liliaceae, native to Uzbekistan, northern Iran and Afghanistan. Growing to 20 cm (8 in) tall, it is a bulbous perennial with wavy red-margined sword-shaped leaves, and bowl-shaped red flowers in early to mid-spring. Each petal has blackish marks at the base. The Latin specific epithet linifolia means "with leaves like flax" (Linum).

Tulipa (Tulipa linifolia) - Blooming

Tulips will bloom in March-May and come in many different colors. Generally, the bulbs require some cooling period in order to produce flowers. This cooling period usually lasts 8 to 10 weeks. The temperature should be in the low 40s to promote the best flower induction.

Tulipa (Tulipa linifolia) - Growth

Spring-flowering bulbous perennials. Plant height varies depending on the species. Very diverse genus. Needs differ with species, but generally grows best in full sun. Tulipa works well in a rock garden or in beds and borders.

Tulipa (Tulipa linifolia) - Planting

Plant bulbs in soil twice as deep as the bulb is wide, and approx. 6 in. apart. Tulips should be planted where there is sun overhead so as not to cause them to lean towards the light.

Tulipa (Tulipa linifolia) - Pest

Gophers, field mice, and aphids can be a problem for Tulips. Also, prone to root and bulb rots, which are more frequently seen in soils that are not well-drained.

Tulipa (Tulipa linifolia) - Interesting facts

Many would readily associate tulips with Holland; however, these flowers are not native to Northern Europe at all. Tulips were originally from Turkey, Afghanistan and Iran. They are found in the mountainous regions of those countries, which explains why they need a cold period during winter in order flower properly. Plant parts can irritate the skin upon contact.

Tulipa (Tulipa linifolia) - Soil and irrigation

Tulips do well with rich, sandy soil but will tolerate being planted in any good soil as long as it has fast drainage. They also require regular watering during growth and while flowering.
